DADU (HRNW) – One of the most high-profile and intensely debated legal battles in Sindh’s history, the “Mehar Triple Murder Case,” has concluded. A Model Court in Dadu delivered the final verdict today, acquitting all primary suspects, including former PPP MPAs Sardar Khan Chandio and Burhan Khan Chandio, due to a lack of evidence.
Background: A Tragic Event that Shook Sindh
The incident dates back to January 17, 2018, in Mehar (District Dadu), where armed assailants opened fire outside a residence, brutally killing three members of the same family: Mukhtar Chandio (father of Umme Rubab), Karamullah Chandio (grandfather), and Kabil Chandio (uncle). At the time, Umme Rubab Chandio was very young, yet she made the historic decision to stand against the influential feudal lords of the region.
Umme Rubab’s Struggle: “A Barefoot Quest for Justice”
The case gained national and international attention when Umme Rubab Chandio began attending court hearings barefoot, symbolizing her protest against the entrenched feudal and sardari system of Sindh. She maintained that her family was decimated by powerful political figures and that the police were hesitant to arrest the influential suspects due to political pressure.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan took notice of the case, leading to years of legal proceedings across courts in Dadu, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
The Verdict: Acquittal Based on Lack of Evidence
In its ruling today, the Dadu Model Court stated that the prosecution failed to produce concrete, undeniable evidence to prove the involvement of the suspects beyond a reasonable doubt.
-
Sardar Khan Chandio and Burhan Khan Chandio were honorably acquitted by the court.
-
Other co-accused, including Murtaza Chandio and Zulfiqar Chandio, were also cleared of the charges.
Questions Over the Judicial System and Future Course
The acquittal has once again sparked a debate over the effectiveness of the investigation process and the influence of powerful figures over the legal system in Sindh. Umme Rubab Chandio, who has remained steadfast in her resolve, is expected to challenge the Model Court’s decision in the Sindh High Court. Despite the legal setback, she has consistently voiced that her struggle for justice against the sardari system will continue regardless of the challenges.
