Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has officially launched a $400 million funding appeal for 2026, warning that the global human rights system is in a state of “survival mode.” Despite a regular budget of $224.3 million approved by the General Assembly—which is 10% lower than last year—the Office (OHCHR) requires these additional voluntary contributions to maintain its “Protection by Presence” missions. Türk highlighted that underfunding in 2025 forced the closure or scaling back of field projects in 17 countries, including Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
