Karachi (HRNW) – A woman has been arrested in Karachi’s Naseem Nagar area for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby. Police have registered a criminal case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
According to police, they received information through the Madadgar-15 emergency service that a woman had allegedly injured her newborn with the intention of killing the child. Following the report, Inspector Benazir Jamali, In-charge of the Naseem Nagar Check Post, along with a police team, immediately reached the hospital.
Police stated that another woman present at the hospital informed investigators that she and Yusra, daughter of Ghulam Ali Babar, were residing in a room at a girls’ hostel in the Naseem Nagar area. According to her statement, Yusra gave birth to a baby at the hostel the previous day and allegedly attempted to kill the newborn by first trying to strangle the child and then attacking the baby with a knife.
Police said that medical letters were issued to the hospital administration to ensure continued medical treatment for both the injured newborn and the accused woman.
Following the preliminary investigation, Naseem Nagar Police arrested Yusra and registered FIR No. 364/2026 under Section 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code (attempt to commit murder).
According to police, investigators also sought information from the accused regarding the alleged incident and the identity of the child’s father. However, police stated that the accused declined to provide any statement on these matters.
Authorities said that further investigation is underway to determine all aspects and circumstances surrounding the case, and additional legal proceedings will continue in accordance with the law.
From a human rights perspective, protecting the life and rights of newborn children is of paramount importance. At the same time, cases involving mothers who have recently given birth require careful, impartial investigations and appropriate consideration of their physical and mental health, including access to medical and psychological care where necessary. The guilt or innocence of the accused can only be determined through due judicial process.
