Kyiv, Ukraine (HRNW): Save the Children has warned that escalating aerial attacks in Ukraine are creating growing dangers for children, humanitarian workers and the infrastructure used to deliver emergency assistance. The organization reported that a guided aerial bomb struck approximately 220 metres from its office in Sumy on 6 August, following a drone strike that severely damaged its humanitarian warehouse earlier the same week.
Save the Children said all staff were accounted for after the Sumy incident and that damage to the office was limited. However, the organization said the attack followed a drone strike that severely damaged a warehouse storing humanitarian supplies intended for children and families affected by the war.
The NGO has warned that repeated attacks are making humanitarian operations increasingly difficult and are adding to the psychological burden on children. Save the Children said children are facing repeated nights in shelters, uncertainty and fear while humanitarian organizations struggle to safely reach communities in need.
The organization has been working in Ukraine since 2014 and expanded its operations following the escalation of the war in February 2022. It reports having supported more than 4.7 million people, including approximately 1.9 million children, through its work with more than 25 partners.
Save the Children has also reported that attacks have affected facilities connected to children’s services. In June, a guided aerial bomb struck a kindergarten in the Kharkiv region where the organization was conducting psychosocial and educational activities, heavily damaging the site.
The organization is calling for civilians and humanitarian personnel to be protected and for attacks on humanitarian facilities, schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure to stop.
The situation illustrates the increasingly dangerous environment in which humanitarian NGOs operate and the direct consequences for children’s rights, including the rights to safety, education, healthcare, psychological wellbeing and humanitarian assistance.
