Bogotá, Colombia (HRNW): Save the Children has launched an emergency response following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia, with the organization reporting significant damage and urgent humanitarian needs among children and families affected by the disaster. The NGO says its teams have begun assessing the impact and establishing safe spaces for children.
The organization reported that thousands of families have suffered damage to or destruction of their homes and urgently require safe drinking water, food, emergency shelter, hygiene supplies, and protection services. Save the Children is preparing a wider package of humanitarian assistance, including food support and nutrition kits.
The NGO’s emergency response places particular emphasis on children, who can face heightened risks following natural disasters, including family separation, psychological distress, disruption of education, lack of safe accommodation, and increased exposure to exploitation or abuse.
Save the Children has established child-friendly safe spaces as part of its early response and is assessing additional needs in affected communities. The organization says flexible emergency funding enables humanitarian teams to respond rapidly when disasters occur.
The earthquake response highlights the importance of disaster preparedness, child protection, emergency healthcare, access to clean water, and rapid humanitarian assistance in protecting fundamental rights following major natural disasters.
International humanitarian organizations continue to stress that children must remain at the centre of disaster-response planning and that emergency assistance should reach affected communities without discrimination.
