KYIV, UKRAINE (HRNW) — Human Rights Watch has warned that continuing Russian attacks and repeated air-raid alerts are disrupting education for Ukrainian children as the new school year begins, adding to years of learning losses caused by the war.
Human Rights Watch has identified the disruption of education as a continuing children’s-rights concern, with schools and students facing the effects of repeated attacks, displacement and prolonged interruptions to normal schooling.
The organization said children in Ukraine have already endured years of interrupted education because of the conflict, while repeated air-raid alerts continue to affect classroom learning and children’s ability to attend school safely.
The impact extends beyond academic education. Long periods of insecurity and displacement can affect children’s mental health, social development and access to stable support systems.
Human Rights Watch is urging authorities and international partners to ensure that schools and students are protected and that children displaced by the conflict can continue receiving quality education.
The organization’s latest warning comes as Ukraine’s education system continues to operate under extraordinary wartime conditions, requiring schools and communities to balance learning with the protection of children from ongoing security threats.
Human Rights Watch has repeatedly emphasized that education remains a fundamental right even during armed conflict and that governments must take steps to protect children and civilian educational infrastructure.
