New York, United States (HRNW): Human Rights Watch has welcomed growing international support for strengthening legal protection for children within the proposed Crimes Against Humanity Treaty, calling the initiative an important step toward improving accountability for serious crimes committed against children during armed conflicts and other crises.
According to Human Rights Watch, governments from different regions have submitted proposals aimed at ensuring that crimes specifically targeting children receive explicit recognition within the treaty negotiations. Human Rights Watch, together with a coalition of civil society organizations, has advocated for stronger legal safeguards that reflect children’s particular vulnerability during conflicts and humanitarian emergencies.
The organization noted that incorporating child-specific protections into international criminal law could strengthen accountability mechanisms while reinforcing states’ obligations to protect children from exploitation, recruitment, violence, trafficking, and other grave violations.
