Lusaka, Zambia (HRNW): Amnesty International has issued a major human rights appeal ahead of Zambia’s 13 August 2026 general elections, urging all candidates to commit to reversing what the organization describes as a growing pattern of authoritarian practices and to strengthening fundamental freedoms. The appeal comes immediately before voters head to the polls.
Amnesty has called for stronger guarantees for freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, political participation, and the work of civil society organizations and human rights defenders. The organization warned that stalled reforms could undermine previously achieved human rights gains.
The NGO has also urged political leaders and authorities to ensure that journalists, activists, opposition supporters, and civil society groups can participate in the electoral process without intimidation, harassment, or unjustified restrictions.
The intervention forms part of Amnesty International’s broader global election-monitoring and human rights advocacy programme. The organization uses research, public campaigning, policy recommendations, and engagement with governments to encourage stronger protection of fundamental rights.
With Zambia’s election taking place on 13 August, human rights and civic-space issues have become an important part of international attention surrounding the country’s democratic process.
