IMPHAL, INDIA (HRNW) — Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged Indian authorities to urgently address renewed ethnic violence in the northeastern state of Manipur after at least seven people were killed in late August, intensifying concerns over continuing insecurity and human-rights abuses.
In a statement released September 4, Human Rights Watch said the latest violence between Naga and Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur’s hill districts has brought the death toll from the current wave of violence, which began in February, to at least 34 people.
The rights organization called on authorities to restore security while ensuring that investigations into alleged abuses are independent, impartial and effective. Human Rights Watch has also emphasized the need to protect civilians and prevent further attacks against ethnic communities.
The renewed violence comes after years of tensions and displacement in Manipur. Communities affected by conflict continue to face serious risks to their security, freedom of movement and access to basic services.
Human Rights Watch said authorities should ensure accountability for abuses and work toward restoring trust between affected communities rather than allowing perpetrators to act with impunity.
The organization’s latest intervention places renewed international attention on the human-rights situation in Manipur and the need for durable measures to protect civilians.
