Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW): The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has launched “The Promise,” a global campaign bringing together 75 prominent voices to reaffirm international support for refugees and the fundamental right of people to seek safety. The initiative was launched on 28 July 2026, marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
The campaign brings together faith leaders, Nobel laureates, artists, athletes, business leaders, refugee representatives, human rights advocates, and other public figures. UNHCR said the initiative aims to build a broad coalition supporting refugee protection ahead of the Global Refugee Forum in 2027.
The 1951 Refugee Convention remains a central international legal instrument for protecting people fleeing persecution and serious threats to their safety. UNHCR continues calling on governments to preserve access to asylum and uphold international obligations toward refugees and asylum seekers.
The anniversary comes as forced displacement remains a major global humanitarian challenge. UNHCR’s 2026 Global Trends reporting continues to track refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, and stateless populations around the world.
UNHCR is also expanding innovative humanitarian programmes. In July, the agency highlighted responsible uses of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to forecast displacement, assess damage, map refugee laws, and improve humanitarian supply chains.
The organization has emphasized that technology must be used responsibly, with safeguards for privacy, dignity, and the rights of forcibly displaced people.
