Paris, France (HRNW): The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has expressed deep concern over recent measures targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC), urging governments worldwide to reaffirm their commitment to international justice and the rule of law. In a statement issued this week, FIDH warned that political pressure against the Court could undermine accountability for serious international crimes and weaken the global fight against impunity.
According to FIDH, the ICC remains a vital institution for investigating and prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and other grave violations where national judicial systems are unable or unwilling to act. The organization emphasized that protecting the Court’s independence is essential for ensuring justice for victims and maintaining confidence in international legal institutions.
The NGO called upon States Parties to the Rome Statute, United Nations bodies, regional organizations, and civil society to strengthen cooperation with the ICC while rejecting measures that could interfere with its judicial mandate. FIDH noted that international justice contributes not only to accountability but also to conflict prevention, reconciliation, and long-term peace.
Beyond its ICC advocacy, FIDH continues implementing programmes on human rights defenders, business and human rights, women’s rights, environmental justice, democratic governance, and judicial independence through its global network of 188 member organizations operating in more than 100 countries. The federation also recently published reports addressing corruption in Pakistan’s justice system, civic space in Europe, and protection of Afghan civil society.
Legal experts observe that independent international judicial institutions remain indispensable in promoting accountability, deterring future abuses, and reinforcing universal respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.
