Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW): The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention with a renewed global appeal to protect the rights of refugees and people forced to flee persecution, war, and violence. On the anniversary, UNHCR launched “The Promise,” bringing together 75 global voices calling for continued commitment to refugee protection.
The 1951 Refugee Convention remains one of the central international legal instruments governing refugee protection. UNHCR has emphasized that people fleeing persecution and conflict must have the opportunity to seek asylum and find safety, while governments have responsibilities under international law to uphold refugee protection principles.
The anniversary comes at a time when displacement remains one of the world’s most urgent humanitarian and human-rights challenges. UNHCR continues providing protection and humanitarian assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, and stateless populations affected by conflicts and other emergencies.
The global campaign has attracted support from prominent figures from humanitarian, political, sporting, cultural, and faith communities. The initiative seeks to remind governments and the public that refugee protection is a shared international responsibility rather than the responsibility of a small number of host countries.
UNHCR’s current work includes emergency assistance, shelter, protection services, support for asylum systems, education, livelihoods, and efforts to find durable solutions for displaced populations. Its country programmes continue supporting governments and partners in strengthening refugee protection and pursuing long-term solutions.
Humanitarian and human-rights organizations have stressed that maintaining access to asylum, preventing forced return to danger, and supporting refugees in host communities remain essential elements of international solidarity.
