Karachi (HRNW) – DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah has revealed that approximately 4.6 million motorcycles are currently operating in Karachi, with nearly 60 percent carrying fake or unauthorized number plates, posing a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies.
He stated that fake number plates not only violate traffic regulations but also create serious obstacles in criminal investigations and the identification of suspects. Authorities are considering various measures to address the growing issue.
Highlighting the city’s transportation challenges, Pir Muhammad Shah said Karachi once had around 9,000 public buses operating on its roads. However, that number has now declined to only about 2,000, significantly affecting public transportation services for millions of residents.
He further disclosed that the number of rickshaws in Karachi has risen to nearly 300,000, increasing pressure on the city’s road network and contributing to worsening traffic congestion.
According to the DIG Traffic, Karachi urgently needs a modern, efficient, and reliable public transport system. He emphasized that eliminating fake number plates and improving traffic management will require close coordination among all relevant government and law enforcement agencies.
