London, United Kingdom (HRNW): Global free expression organization ARTICLE 19 has intensified its international advocacy for press freedom and protection of journalists, issuing a series of statements this month calling on governments to uphold freedom of expression and safeguard independent media. The organization has recently addressed concerns involving journalists and human rights defenders in the United Kingdom, Thailand, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tunisia, Iran, Malaysia, and several other countries.
Among its latest initiatives, ARTICLE 19 called on UK authorities to strengthen protections against transnational repression, highlighting concerns over threats faced by exiled journalists and human rights defenders. The organization stressed that democratic societies have a responsibility to ensure individuals can exercise their right to free expression without intimidation or harassment.
The NGO has also urged authorities in Bangladesh to withdraw charges against journalists, called for justice following attacks on journalists in Kenya, expressed concern over restrictions on media freedom in Tunisia, and advocated for transparent freedom of information legislation in Malaysia. These actions form part of ARTICLE 19’s broader mission to defend freedom of expression, access to information, digital rights, and independent journalism worldwide.
In addition to advocacy, ARTICLE 19 continues conducting research through its Global Expression Report, providing analysis on global trends affecting civic space, digital freedoms, internet governance, artificial intelligence, and media independence.
