London, United Kingdom (HRNW): Amnesty International has warned that increasingly severe heatwaves are exposing the growing intersection between climate change and human rights. In a recent global statement, the organization said extreme temperatures are disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities, older persons, outdoor workers, children, and people living in poverty, calling for urgent rights-based climate policies.
Amnesty stressed that governments should strengthen heat-action plans, expand public health protections, improve access to safe water, and ensure labour protections for workers exposed to dangerous temperatures. The organization also urged stronger international cooperation to address climate-related inequalities and environmental justice.
The NGO noted that climate change is increasingly affecting the rights to health, food, housing, education, and an adequate standard of living. It called upon governments and businesses to adopt policies that protect vulnerable populations while accelerating climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
