London, United Kingdom (HRNW): Save the Children has raised alarm over a rapidly worsening child nutrition crisis in Somalia, reporting a sharp increase in severe acute malnutrition among children admitted to its stabilization centres in Baidoa. The organization warned that reduced humanitarian funding, prolonged drought, high food prices, and conflict are pushing vulnerable families deeper into crisis.
According to Save the Children, its health facilities treated 400 children with severe acute malnutrition and medical complications in June 2026, nearly three times the number treated in January. The NGO also reported that shortages of therapeutic food and the closure of hundreds of nutrition facilities have significantly reduced access to life-saving treatment.
The organization has appealed to governments, international donors, and humanitarian agencies to urgently increase funding for nutrition, healthcare, food security, and clean water programmes. Save the Children stressed that timely intervention can prevent avoidable child deaths and help avert famine in the most affected districts.
