Caracas, Venezuela (HRNW): Amnesty International has launched an urgent human rights action calling on Venezuelan authorities to ensure that relief operations following the 24 June 2026 earthquakes respect humanitarian principles and protect the rights of affected communities. The organization has particularly emphasized safeguards for children, older people, displaced families, and other people facing heightened vulnerability.
Amnesty said emergency assistance should be provided on the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence, without discrimination. The organization has also urged authorities to protect journalists and independent media organizations reporting on the disaster, arguing that accurate public information can be essential to rescue and relief operations.
The NGO has further raised concerns about restrictions affecting civil society and humanitarian organizations in Venezuela. It has called for the removal of barriers that prevent legitimate humanitarian organizations from reaching communities in need and for stronger protection of people at risk of discrimination or abuse following the disaster.
Amnesty’s campaign represents a broader human-rights approach to disaster response, emphasizing that emergency relief should not only address immediate humanitarian needs but also protect dignity, equality, freedom of information, and the rights of vulnerable populations.
The organization has urged the Venezuelan authorities and international community to ensure transparent relief operations, independent monitoring, and effective protection for people affected by the earthquakes.
