Baku, Azerbaijan (HRNW): Human Rights Watch has called on Azerbaijani authorities to release opposition leader Ali Karimli and end what the organization describes as increasingly punitive detention conditions. Karimli, chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, has been detained since November 2025 and faces charges that could carry a life sentence.
Human Rights Watch reported that restrictions on Karimli have intensified, including limits on telephone communication, restrictions on family food parcels, removal of his television, confiscation of newspapers, and restrictions affecting materials provided by his lawyers. The organization said the reported conditions raise serious concerns about possible inhuman or degrading treatment.
HRW also linked Karimli’s detention to broader concerns about restrictions on Azerbaijan’s political opposition and civic space. According to the organization, more than 20 members of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party have reportedly been detained, placed in pretrial detention, or subjected to travel bans since November 2025.
Human Rights Watch is calling for an end to punitive restrictions, Karimli’s release from pretrial detention, and the withdrawal of what it characterizes as unfounded charges. The organization is also urging Azerbaijan’s international partners to raise the case during diplomatic engagements.
The case highlights the continuing importance of independent monitoring, political freedoms, fair-trial guarantees, and protection of opposition figures and civil society actors in countries where civic space is under pressure.
