JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (HRNW) — Human Rights Watch is calling for stronger protection of women and girls in South Africa following the discovery of several women’s bodies around Johannesburg and renewed public concern over gender-based violence.
In a September 22 statement, Human Rights Watch said the discovery of the bodies had generated fear, anxiety and public concern.
The organization said the cases highlight continuing challenges surrounding gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
Human Rights Watch is urging authorities to ensure that investigations into killings are prompt, thorough and transparent and that victims’ families receive appropriate information and support.
The organization also called for stronger measures to prevent violence against women and girls and for authorities to ensure access to justice for survivors.
The developments come amid continuing activism by South African women’s rights groups and civil-society organizations demanding stronger government action against gender-based violence.
Human Rights Watch emphasized that women should be able to live free from violence and that authorities have responsibilities to prevent, investigate and prosecute serious crimes.
The organization also highlighted the importance of effective victim-support services, including access to healthcare, legal assistance and psychosocial support.
Public demonstrations and vigils concerning gender-based violence have continued in South Africa, including events involving students and women’s rights advocates.
Human Rights Watch said government responses should focus on concrete protection measures and accountability rather than placing responsibility for preventing violence primarily on women themselves.
The organization is calling for strengthened investigations, improved protection mechanisms and effective implementation of measures addressing violence against women and girls.
