New York, United States (HRNW): UNICEF has issued an urgent appeal for greater protection of children following reports that at least 23 children were killed and 25 others injured during intensified fighting in North Kordofan, Sudan, over the past two months. The agency also reported that attacks have disrupted humanitarian assistance and placed thousands of children at increased risk.
According to UNICEF, ongoing violence has severely affected children’s access to healthcare, education, nutrition, and safe water. The organization warned that continued hostilities are exposing children to grave violations of their rights while limiting humanitarian access to vulnerable communities.
UNICEF has called upon all parties to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure safe humanitarian access so life-saving assistance can reach children and families in need. The agency continues working with humanitarian partners to deliver emergency nutrition, medical supplies, education support, and child protection services across conflict-affected areas.
The organization reaffirmed that every child has the right to safety, education, healthcare, and protection regardless of the circumstances, urging the international community to increase humanitarian funding for Sudan.
