New York, United States (HRNW): Human Rights Watch (HRW) has warned that the United Nations’ continuing financial and liquidity crisis could undermine critical human rights and humanitarian operations around the world. In a 20 July 2026 report, HRW said severe funding problems are affecting the UN’s ability to carry out important programmes protecting human rights and saving lives.
HRW reported that the UN General Assembly amended a longstanding financial rule on 30 June 2026 in an effort to ease the organization’s liquidity problems. However, the human rights organization said significant funding challenges remain and could continue affecting international human rights mechanisms and humanitarian operations.
The organization called on UN Member States to ensure that the United Nations has sufficient resources to fulfil its responsibilities. HRW particularly highlighted the importance of maintaining international monitoring, investigations, reporting, and mechanisms designed to protect vulnerable populations.
The funding crisis comes as humanitarian needs remain high across multiple regions affected by armed conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and political instability. Civil society organizations have warned that reductions in international resources can make it more difficult to document abuses and provide assistance to affected communities.
Human Rights Watch continues monitoring rights developments worldwide. Its latest July reporting has included concerns about judicial independence in Nepal, prosecutions of rights advocates in the Philippines, conditions facing Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and alleged abuses in Sudan and other conflict-affected regions.
The organization has emphasized that sustained international cooperation and adequate financing are essential for effective human rights protection, accountability, and humanitarian action.
