BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (HRNW) — Amnesty International has accused Meta of failing to adequately protect Hungarian users from anti-LGBTI content on Facebook, warning that online platforms continue to play a major role in enabling discrimination and hostility against marginalized communities.
In a new report published September 8, Amnesty said it investigated anti-LGBTI content on Facebook and found material that should have been removed under Meta’s own policies but remained accessible.
The organization said the findings are particularly concerning in Hungary, where LGBTI people and organizations have faced increasing political and legal pressure.
Amnesty has called on Meta to strengthen enforcement of its policies and ensure that content targeting people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is addressed promptly and consistently.
The rights organization also stressed that online abuse can contribute to a wider climate of discrimination, intimidation and exclusion, particularly when hateful material is amplified through large social-media networks.
Amnesty’s intervention highlights the growing connection between digital rights and broader human-rights protection, as online platforms increasingly influence public debate and political participation.
The organization is urging technology companies to respect human rights and ensure that their moderation systems provide meaningful protection to vulnerable communities.
