The United Nations General Assembly opened its 81st session on 8 September 2026, beginning a new year of international diplomacy under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman is serving as President of the 81st session. The opening comes ahead of the high-level General Debate, scheduled to begin on 22 September, when heads of state and government will gather in New York.
The new session is expected to focus heavily on international peace and security, humanitarian crises, sustainable development, climate action and efforts to strengthen confidence in multilateral institutions.
