Lusaka, Zambia (HRNW): Amnesty International has called on candidates contesting Zambia’s 13 August 2026 general elections to commit to reversing what it describes as a growing pattern of authoritarian practices and to strengthening protection of human rights and democratic freedoms. The organization’s appeal comes just days before voters go to the polls.
Amnesty has urged political leaders to place human rights at the centre of their election commitments, including protection for freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and the work of civil society organizations and human rights defenders. The organization warned that stalled reforms could reverse progress previously made in protecting fundamental rights.
The election has therefore become an important focus for international human rights organizations monitoring democratic participation and civic space in Zambia. Amnesty is using its research, advocacy, public campaigning, and engagement with political authorities to encourage rights-respecting governance.
The organization has also called for authorities to ensure that journalists, activists, opposition supporters, and civil society organizations can participate in the electoral process without intimidation, harassment, or unnecessary restrictions.
The latest intervention forms part of Amnesty International’s wider global programme to monitor elections, document human rights violations, support human rights defenders, and advocate for reforms consistent with international human rights standards.
