Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW): The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has opened its 118th session, running from 10 to 25 August 2026 in Geneva. The session provides an important international platform for reviewing government commitments to combat racial discrimination and for civil society organizations and national human rights institutions to contribute information to the UN process.
The committee is scheduled to examine state reports from Finland, Honduras, India, and Kuwait, while also considering follow-up information from Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador, Kenya, Monaco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom. The committee will also address a list of issues concerning Eritrea.
A significant element of the session is the opportunity for NGOs and national human rights institutions to submit information to CERD. The committee’s official guidance specifically provides procedures for civil society submissions, enabling organizations to bring evidence and community concerns concerning racial discrimination before an international human rights mechanism.
The session illustrates the continuing role of NGOs in international human rights accountability. Civil society organizations can provide information that complements official government reports and can highlight discrimination affecting minorities, migrants, indigenous communities, religious or ethnic groups, and other vulnerable populations.
CERD’s public meetings are also webcast, increasing transparency and enabling human rights advocates, researchers, journalists, and members of the public to follow the international review process.
The current session is particularly significant as governments and civil society organizations continue confronting discrimination in areas including access to education, employment, justice, housing, political participation, and public services. International monitoring mechanisms such as CERD remain an important avenue for documenting concerns and pressing governments to strengthen equality and non-discrimination protections.
