Bogotá, Colombia (HRNW): UNICEF is scaling up its humanitarian response following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia, focusing on the immediate needs of children and families affected in Chocó and Buenaventura. The agency announced the expanded response on 11 August 2026 as thousands of people faced the consequences of the disaster.
UNICEF is working with government authorities and humanitarian partners to assess the needs of affected communities and support access to essential services. Its emergency response focuses on children and families who may face heightened risks following displacement, damage to homes and infrastructure, interruption of education, and limited access to clean water and healthcare.
The organization’s emergency operations are part of its broader humanitarian programme, which combines immediate life-saving assistance with measures designed to help communities recover and strengthen resilience against future emergencies.
UNICEF has emphasized that children must remain a central priority during disaster responses. Protecting children after an earthquake includes ensuring access to safe water, sanitation, healthcare, education, psychosocial support, family protection, and safe spaces.
The Colombia response comes shortly after UNICEF also responded to major earthquakes in Venezuela, demonstrating the organization’s continuing focus on protecting children during natural disasters across Latin America.
The emergency highlights the importance of international humanitarian cooperation, rapid disaster assessment, child-protection systems, and adequate funding to ensure that vulnerable families receive assistance quickly after major disasters.
