KATHMANDU, NEPAL (HRNW) — Children who survived devastating flash floods in Nepal are facing mounting psychological distress, with humanitarian workers reporting fear, anxiety and trauma among children who witnessed deaths, destruction and the loss of homes and communities.
Save the Children reported on September 2 that its teams had spoken with children in Nuwakot district who described frightening experiences during the floods. Some children reportedly witnessed school buses carrying their friends being swept away, while others saw their homes submerged and communities devastated.
The organization warned that the immediate emergency does not end when floodwaters recede. Children who experience disasters can face prolonged emotional and psychological effects, particularly when families are displaced, schools are damaged and normal community support systems are disrupted.
Save the Children has been providing emergency assistance while working to identify children requiring additional protection and psychosocial support.
The latest warning follows the devastating floods that struck northern Nepal, where emergency teams have been working to reach affected communities and reunite children with their families. Earlier, Save the Children reported that nine schoolchildren who had been stranded at school for two days were successfully reunited with their families.
Humanitarian organizations say continued investment in child protection, education and mental-health support will be essential as Nepal moves from immediate rescue operations toward recovery.
