UNESCO has backed 197 multi-stakeholder recommendations aimed at improving digital-platform governance and strengthening public-interest journalism across Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
The recommendations promote a rights-based approach to digital platforms while addressing disinformation and supporting journalism as a public good.
UNESCO said the recommendations were developed through an EU-funded regional project and are based on research examining governance of social-media platforms and online media.
The initiative comes amid growing international concern over misinformation, platform accountability and the impact of rapidly changing digital technologies on public debate and independent journalism.
