New York, United States (HRNW): Human Rights Watch (HRW) has renewed its concern over continuing restrictions affecting civil society organizations in Burkina Faso, following measures that have increased pressure on independent associations and human rights groups. The organization has called upon the authorities to respect freedom of association, freedom of expression, and the legitimate role of civil society in democratic governance.
According to Human Rights Watch, an active and independent civil society contributes to transparency, accountability, humanitarian assistance, and protection of vulnerable communities. HRW urged authorities to ensure that legal and administrative measures affecting NGOs remain consistent with international human rights standards and do not unnecessarily restrict peaceful civic engagement.
The organization continues monitoring developments across West Africa through field research, policy analysis, and advocacy. HRW works with regional and international partners to encourage dialogue, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote respect for universal human rights principles while supporting the work of independent journalists and civil society organizations.
