Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has pledged that every adult American citizen could receive $5,000 if the Republican Party retains control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November midterm elections.
Addressing a Republican Party midterm convention in Dallas, Trump described the proposal as the “Trump Dividend” and said the funds would have to be spent within the United States.
Trump did not immediately provide details on how the payments would be financed. Vice President JD Vance later suggested that wealthy Americans could be excluded from the program and indicated that revenue generated through tariffs could potentially be used to fund the payments.
Analysts estimate that providing $5,000 to around 240 million adult Americans would cost approximately $1.2 trillion, with the total potentially higher if all adults are included. The proposal would also require approval from Congress.
The announcement comes as the United States faces a substantial budget deficit and national debt of around $40 trillion. Economists and experts have warned that distributing such a large amount could increase the government’s financial burden and potentially add upward pressure on inflation.
Trump’s pledge comes as Republicans intensify their campaign ahead of the November midterm elections, in which control of both chambers of Congress is at stake.
