Berlin (HRNW)- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cancelled a scheduled phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, just hours after Trump publicly welcomed the electoral success of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in regional elections.
A spokesperson for Merz did not give a reason for the cancellation but clarified that it was not caused by scheduling conflicts or prior commitments. No new date has been announced for a conversation between the two leaders.
Trump, in a social media post, described the AfD’s electoral performance as a “big night” and criticized Germany’s immigration policies. He also used the slogan “MGGA” in support of the AfD, echoing his “MAGA” campaign slogan.
Merz has previously described the AfD as a racist party and a threat to German democracy. Addressing the German parliament on Wednesday, he compared the party’s “remigration” policy to “ethnic cleansing” based on race and color. The AfD has rejected the allegations.
The AfD made significant gains in Sunday’s regional elections in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, intensifying debates over immigration, relations with Russia and the party’s growing political influence in Germany.
