KATHMANDU, NEPAL (HRNW) — UNICEF has stepped up its emergency response to devastating flash floods in Nepal, with a major humanitarian shipment arriving in Kathmandu to support children and families affected by the disaster.
A flight carrying 84 metric tonnes of critical humanitarian supplies arrived in Kathmandu on September 4 with support from European Union Humanitarian Aid. UNICEF said the supplies are being dispatched to children and families affected by flash floods in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin.
The emergency supplies are intended to support urgent humanitarian needs as communities struggle with the consequences of widespread flooding, displacement and disruption of essential services.
UNICEF’s response is focused particularly on children, who face heightened risks during major disasters, including separation from caregivers, disease, interruption of education and lack of access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare.
The arrival of the shipment marks a significant expansion of international humanitarian assistance as Nepal moves from immediate rescue efforts toward sustained relief and recovery.
UNICEF and humanitarian partners are working to ensure that essential supplies reach affected communities as quickly as possible, while continuing to assess the needs of children and families in flood-hit areas.
The organization has emphasized that protecting children during emergencies requires not only emergency relief but also continued access to health, nutrition, education, water and child-protection services.
