IMPHAL, INDIA (HRNW) — Human Rights Watch has called on Indian authorities to take urgent measures to stop renewed ethnic violence in Manipur, warning that continued clashes are placing civilian communities at growing risk.
Human Rights Watch said at least seven people were killed in late August in violence between Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in the state’s hill districts, bringing the death toll from the current wave of violence since February to 34.
The latest clashes form part of a wider conflict that has affected Manipur since 2023. Human Rights Watch said more than 260 people have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced since the broader ethnic violence began.
The organization reported that armed groups have burned homes, taken hostages, blocked highways and engaged in gunfire, while blockades have disrupted supplies of food, fuel and medical assistance.
Human Rights Watch said shortages and restricted movement have made it harder for residents to reach hospitals at a time when illnesses including dengue, typhoid and scrub typhus are circulating.
The organization has urged authorities to restore freedom of movement, ensure humanitarian assistance reaches affected communities and provide adequate food, shelter, clean water, medical care, sanitation and education for displaced children.
Human Rights Watch is also calling for impartial investigations, accountability for abuses by all sides and measures to rebuild trust between communities.
The latest warning places renewed international attention on the humanitarian and human-rights consequences of continuing ethnic violence in northeastern India.
