New Delhi (HRNW)- At least seven students have been killed and dozens more are feared trapped after a five-story private hostel building collapsed in south Delhi.
According to Indian authorities, rescue teams have so far pulled 11 people from the rubble, while an estimated 30 to 50 students may still be trapped. Rescue operations are continuing with the assistance of heavy machinery.
Initial reports suggest that water had accumulated in the building’s basement and repair work was underway when the structure suddenly collapsed. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
CCTV footage circulating on social media reportedly shows people nearby fleeing to safety immediately after the building collapsed.
Rescue teams remain engaged in searching the debris for survivors as concerns grow over the number of people still trapped.
