Nalchik (HRNW)- At least 11 climbers have been killed and six remain missing after a powerful avalanche struck Mount Mezgergi in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria region.
According to media reports, the incident occurred in the Bezengi Gorge in the evening, where a group of 33 climbers was present. Ten people managed to reach safety on their own, while six injured climbers were taken to hospital.
More than 50 rescue workers are participating in the search operation. However, difficult mountainous terrain and the risk of further avalanches are complicating rescue efforts.
Russian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident as rescue teams continue searching for the missing climbers.
