A UN independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria has warned that some Israeli military actions in southern Syria may amount to war crimes, according to a new assessment released amid continuing regional tensions.

The commission cited Israeli ground incursions, raids and the establishment of military infrastructure in southern Syria. It also raised concerns over the detention of 49 people, including two children, with allegations that some detainees were transferred to Israel.

The commission described Israel’s military presence in parts of southern Syria as having become increasingly entrenched and said civilians have been adversely affected.

Israel has rejected the UN assessment and defended its military activities as necessary for the protection of its citizens.
