The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has raised fresh concerns over North Korea’s nuclear programme after identifying what appears to be a new uranium-enrichment facility at the Yongbyon nuclear complex.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said satellite imagery indicates that the newly identified facility could accommodate up to 28 centrifuge cascades. The agency also reported indications of expanded enrichment activity at the Kangson site near Pyongyang.
The IAEA said the developments are deeply concerning because North Korea’s continued nuclear activities violate relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The agency has been unable to conduct inspections inside North Korea since 2009 and is therefore relying on satellite imagery and other publicly available information.
The latest assessment comes amid continuing international concern over North Korea’s expansion of its capacity to produce weapons-grade nuclear material.
