The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is ramping up preparedness and response planning as El Niño threatens to worsen food insecurity for tens of millions of people.
WFP says climate-related shocks can severely affect agricultural production, food availability and household incomes, particularly in communities that are already experiencing conflict, displacement or economic hardship.
The agency is preparing humanitarian operations in vulnerable regions where El Niño-related drought and extreme weather could increase the number of people requiring emergency food assistance.
The warning comes as the UN system continues to monitor the combined impact of climate shocks and conflict on global hunger. WFP’s latest global hunger assessment estimates that 266 million people are at risk of acute hunger in 2026.
