Karachi (HRNW) – Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police Karachi, Azad Khan, has announced a zero-tolerance policy against extortion, organized crime, land grabbing, and drug trafficking, assuring the business community that ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for trade and industry remains the top priority of Sindh Police.
Addressing a meeting during his visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Azad Khan said terrorism, extortion, and street crime continue to be major challenges for law enforcement agencies. However, close coordination with intelligence agencies and enhanced policing has resulted in a significant reduction in major crimes. He reaffirmed that indiscriminate action against extortionists, land mafias, drug dealers, and organized criminal networks will continue.
He stated that Karachi, as Pakistan’s economic hub, remains at the forefront of the police’s operational priorities, emphasizing that protecting the city’s commercial and industrial activities is directly linked to safeguarding the national economy.
Sharing crime statistics, the AIG said terrorist incidents across Sindh declined from 37 during the same period last year to just eight this year, with no major terrorist attacks reported. He attributed this improvement to effective intelligence gathering, proactive operations, and strong coordination among law enforcement agencies.
Regarding street crime, he noted that overall incidents fell by approximately 15 percent during the first six months of the current year compared to the same period last year. Murders during robberies declined by around 30 percent, robbery-related injuries by 40 percent, vehicle snatching by nearly 30 percent, while motorcycle and vehicle theft dropped by about 20 percent. He acknowledged a slight increase in mobile phone snatching incidents but said the overall security situation had improved.
On extortion, Azad Khan emphasized that such cases remain among the highest operational priorities for Karachi Police. During the first six months of the year, nine alleged extortionists were killed in police encounters, around 15 were injured, and 61 suspects were arrested. He also urged citizens not to provide employment or shelter to undocumented Afghan nationals, in line with the federal government’s policy.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah informed the meeting that the implementation of a new traffic management system had reduced fatalities involving heavy vehicles by 40 percent, saving approximately 60 lives and preventing 217 people from suffering severe injuries or permanent disabilities. He also announced that Karachi Traffic Police has launched the city’s first comprehensive scientific study on traffic congestion to support future traffic engineering and administrative reforms.
Businessmen Group (BMG) Chairman Zubair Motiwala urged authorities to prioritize resolving issues faced by traders in Jodia Bazaar, Cloth Market, and other wholesale markets, citing concerns over security, encroachments, severe traffic congestion, and administrative actions. He also proposed appointing dedicated police focal persons for major markets and introducing an online First Information Report (FIR) registration system.
BMG Vice Chairman Anjum Nisar welcomed the continued engagement between Karachi Police and the business community, stating that effective dialogue between law enforcement agencies and stakeholders is essential for promoting investment and sustainable economic growth.
KCCI President Rehan Hanif acknowledged that Karachi’s law and order situation has improved significantly compared to four or five years ago, crediting Sindh Police for restoring stability. However, he expressed concern over persistent street crime and called for more aggressive action against criminals. He also urged authorities to expand the Safe City Project by extending the network of surveillance cameras across Karachi to strengthen crime prevention, improve investigations, and enhance public confidence.
