The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported a renewed rise in international food commodity prices in August, with its Food Price Index increasing 1.9 percent from July.
FAO said its index averaged 133.3 points in August 2026, up 2.5 points from the revised July figure and 2.5 percent higher than a year earlier.
Cereal prices climbed to their highest level since May 2024, with wheat prices rising 2.6 percent from July. FAO linked the increases to strong demand, weather concerns affecting crop prospects and continued uncertainty surrounding Black Sea export flows.
The sugar price index recorded an especially sharp increase, rising 11.9 percent in August amid concerns over global supplies, hot and dry weather and production prospects affected by El Niño-related conditions.
FAO cautioned that international food-price movements remain sensitive to weather, trade flows and production conditions.
