The UN Security Council has turned renewed attention to Syria’s chemical-weapons legacy following revelations concerning previously undeclared material and the discovery of an undeclared chemical weapons cache.
The Council met on 3 September to receive briefings on the latest developments and discuss the way forward. UN Security Council reporting said the meeting followed information from the UN nuclear watchdog concerning the former Syrian regime and the discovery of chemical weapons material.
The Council’s September programme is being conducted under the presidency of France, with Syria and wider Middle East security among the issues receiving attention.
The developments come as the international community continues to assess Syria’s transition and outstanding questions concerning chemical and nuclear-related materials.
