ROME/TIRANA (HRNW): Italy’s controversial agreement with Albania for processing and detention of migrants and asylum seekers has come under renewed criticism from Amnesty International.
A recent Amnesty briefing examined the human-rights impact of the agreement since it entered into force in January 2024, including concerns involving detention, access to lawyers and courts, monitoring mechanisms and the ability of civil society organizations to assist affected people.
Amnesty has warned that offshore detention arrangements could jeopardize the safety, liberty and human rights of migrants and asylum seekers.
Human Rights Perspective:
Migration control must not override the right to seek asylum, access to legal assistance, humane treatment and protection from arbitrary detention or refoulement.
