Geneva (HRNW) —The UN Women has called on the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan to immediately remove restrictions preventing female staff from entering United Nations offices across the country. The ban, which has lasted for six months, is described by the UN as unprecedented in the organization’s history.
According to the UN statement, the restriction makes it extremely difficult for humanitarian agencies to reach Afghan women and girls who rely on aid programs. Female staff are essential for delivering health services, education support, and protection programs to women who cannot interact with male aid workers due to cultural restrictions.
The appeal comes ahead of International Women’s Day, with UN officials stressing that women’s participation in humanitarian work is vital to protecting human rights and delivering life-saving assistance.
