Bihar (HRNW)- According to the preliminary results of the assembly elections in the Indian state of Bihar, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a clear lead.
According to the initial results, the NDA is leading in 199 seats in the 243-member assembly, while 122 seats are required to form the government.
According to reports, the BJP is leading in 84 seats, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) is leading in 78 seats, while Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party is leading in 22 seats. On the other hand, the opposition alliance Mahagathbandhan is leading in only 50 seats, while the Congress has managed to win 7 seats so far.
Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah had claimed that the NDA would win 160 seats and form the government with a two-thirds majority. After the initial lead, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said that after winning Bihar, the next target will be West Bengal.
The election results will also determine whether Nitish Kumar will continue as chief minister for a fifth consecutive term.
Unemployment and poverty are major issues in Bihar, India’s poorest state with a population of 130 million, which the BJP has been campaigning on. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also announced $8 billion in development projects for the state in September.
According to analysts, if the BJP alliance succeeds in Bihar, the path could be paved for the party in other key states in the future.
