Geneva (HRNW) — A United Nations investigative body has stated that an airstrike targeting a prison in Iran may amount to a war crime under international law. According to the report, the strike caused damage to a detention facility where prisoners and civilian staff were present at the time.
Human rights experts emphasized that detention centers are protected under international humanitarian law and must not be targeted unless they are being used for clear military purposes. The investigators warned that escalating military confrontations in the region could lead to further violations of humanitarian law if strict precautions are not taken.
The UN has called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international law and ensure the protection of civilians and detainees.
