The World Health Organization says cholera deaths increased by 30 percent in 2025, reaching the highest annual number reported to WHO since 1999.
WHO recorded 451,499 reported cholera cases and 7,870 deaths in 47 countries during 2025. The agency cautioned that the reported figures do not represent the full global burden because many infections are not reported or detected.
Seven countries — Angola, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen — accounted for about 90 percent of reported cholera cases and deaths worldwide.
WHO said expanded vaccination, disease surveillance, safe water, sanitation and timely access to treatment remain critical to reducing deaths from the preventable and treatable disease.
