UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is experiencing what he described as the most dangerous nuclear moment since the end of the Cold War, calling for renewed international efforts to reduce nuclear risks.
Speaking at a UN General Assembly meeting marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Guterres pointed to expanding and modernizing nuclear arsenals, increasingly confrontational nuclear rhetoric and technological developments that can increase the risk of mistakes and miscalculation.
He also highlighted the expiration of the New START Treaty and the failure of the latest review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to reach a substantive consensus.
Guterres called for nuclear-armed states to return to dialogue and emphasized the UN position that nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.
