AMMAN, JORDAN (HRNW) — UNICEF is calling for continued international support for children in Jordan as declining humanitarian funding creates additional pressure on programs serving vulnerable children and families.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell made the appeal following a two-day visit to Jordan that concluded on September 29.
During the visit, Russell met children, families and community organizations working to support vulnerable communities.
UNICEF said Jordan has made significant progress in areas affecting children’s health, education and protection.
The country hosts large numbers of refugees and continues to provide services to vulnerable children affected by regional conflicts.
Russell visited a Jordan River Foundation community centre supported by UNICEF.
The centre provides programs intended to help children and families access education, protection and other services.
UNICEF said declining humanitarian funding threatens the continuity of programs supporting children and vulnerable households.
The organization warned that funding shortages can place pressure on services even when communities continue to face significant humanitarian needs.
UNICEF is calling on international partners to maintain support for child-focused programs.
The agency said sustained financing is necessary to preserve gains already achieved in education, healthcare, child protection and social services.
Jordan has also been affected by wider regional instability, including conflicts that have generated additional displacement and humanitarian needs.
UNICEF said support for refugee and host communities remains important to maintaining access to essential services.
The organization emphasized the importance of ensuring that children remain at the centre of development and humanitarian policies.
Russell also highlighted the role of local organizations in delivering services directly to children and families.
UNICEF said partnerships between government institutions, civil-society organizations and international agencies remain important for protecting vulnerable children.
The agency is urging donors to maintain predictable funding as humanitarian requirements continue across the region.
The appeal comes amid wider concerns among humanitarian organizations about declining international aid budgets and increasing humanitarian needs.
