New Delhi/Dhaka (HRNW)- Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that she intends to return to Bangladesh in December, despite the possibility of arrest or threats to her safety.
According to international media reports, Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India, said she would return to Bangladesh along with other leaders of the Awami League and is prepared to face any legal proceedings upon her arrival.
She said she is aware that she could be arrested or face risks to her life after returning, but added that these concerns would not deter her from going back to her homeland.
Addressing her supporters, Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League cannot be suppressed and that efforts are underway to reorganize the party. She added that virtual meetings are being held across different constituencies as part of the party’s reorganization campaign.
Sheikh Hasina moved to India following the fall of her government in 2024. Since then, multiple legal cases have been filed against her in Bangladesh, and she was convicted in absentia in one case. She has repeatedly rejected the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and aimed at sidelining the Awami League from national politics.
Political analysts believe that if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh as announced, political tensions could intensify, with potential implications for the country’s domestic political landscape as well as its relations with neighboring India.
