Karachi (HRNW) — August 24, 2026: A senior civil court in Malir has issued notices to the parties in a Rs172.12 million compensation claim filed over the death of a citizen allegedly caused by inadequate safety arrangements during construction of the Karachi Red Line project.
The court has summoned the parties for September 21, 2026, and sought their responses.
The claim names the Sindh Government, Malir Cantonment Board, Red Line Project Director, contractor and other relevant parties as respondents.
According to the petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Usman Farooq, the incident occurred in January this year when a citizen identified as Shahid was returning home late at night with his wife and child.
The counsel told the court that near Jinnah Avenue, their vehicle collided with a barrier placed in the middle of the road. Shahid died in the accident, while his wife and child sustained injuries.
The petitioner’s lawyer alleged that the barriers placed along the road had neither reflectors nor warning signs. He further claimed that the absence of adequate street lighting made the barriers difficult to see at night.
According to the petitioner, the accident occurred because of alleged negligence and inadequate safety arrangements during the Red Line construction work.
The counsel argued that ensuring safe passage and adequate safety measures for road users during construction was a fundamental responsibility of those overseeing the project.
The family has claimed that Shahid was the sole breadwinner, and his death has caused serious financial hardship for his dependents.
The petitioner has requested the court to order the respondents to pay Rs172.12 million in compensation to the bereaved family.
